Do You Need To Detox?

Several weeks ago, with temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees (which is rare on the Sonoma coast in Northern California) I pulled out my swimsuit from underneath the bed so I could enjoy a relaxing day pool-side with a good book but wound up entangled in a massive cleaning operation instead…

After the long wet winter I discovered mold on all my clothes stored beneath my bed and in the closet. During the cleaning frenzy I washed each article of clothing, wiped down every surface and flung open all the windows to air out the cottage. Consequently, I got sick. Headache, body aches, burning itchy eyes, sore throat; I was really suffering. Fortunately I knew the exposure to mold was causing this reaction and I wanted to support my bodies intelligent ability of removing toxins on its own.

By design, our bodies do this automatically all the time, every day. What we don't realize is that we can support this process naturally. The fact is, we have a natural detox system in our body that works very well if supported. The liver does a great job of flushing out waste every day, the lymph rids the body of unwanted matter, our lungs breath out pollutants, our kidneys filter toxins, and our digestive system lets things pass through that we don’t need to absorb.

By trusting our bodies innate wisdom, maintaining a supportive diet of clean healthy food, eliminating trans fats and processed refined foods, we can gain all the nutrient cofactors necessary to enhance the detoxification process. These nutrients can be found in various herbs and foods such as; broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, apples, celery, parsley, garlic, ginger, clover, yellow dock, burdock, dandelion, milk thistle, early spring greens such as mustard, dandelion greens, ramps, leafy greens, beet greens and chard. Therefore you can imagine what was in my grocery sack at the farmers market the next day. I got everything needed to make this delicious juice for influencing Detoxification. It has B Vitamins, Folic Acid, Antioxidants, Carotenoids, Vitamin E and C, Amino Acids and Sulfated Phytochemicals that are all key components to influencing the enzyme reaction during the detoxification phases.

After a couple weeks of drinking this detoxification juice daily, supplements that included NAC, a diet of fresh seasonal local organic fruits and vegetables, a quart of medicinal strength tea daily, tinctures, personally formulated flower essences and adequate amounts of water, my feelings of lethargy were gone, my inflammation and aching joints were gone, my digestion improved and my headaches were gone. My energy returned and I was back to being ME!

It was simple AND delicious!

Detoxification “Juice”
In a blender or juicer puree:

  • 1/2 jar organic cranberry juice, (no added sugar to preserve antioxidants and flavonoids)

  • 1 beet with the greens

  • 1/4 purple cabbage

  • 1 super dark red apple

  • 1 handful blueberries

  • 1 handful kale

  • 1 handful arugula

  • 2 carrots

  • 1 handful parsley

  • 2 celery stalks

  • 1 small piece turmeric root (peeled)

  • 1/4 small piece of ginger root (peeled for flavor and circulation)

Note:  You can find a cranberry blueberry juice blend just make sure there is no added sugar.  This makes a lot of juice and can be stored in a large jar in the refrigerator for up to three days.  You can add more juice or filtered water as needed if it becomes too thick. This can also be strained if you don't have a juicer.  Although I don't mind some of the pulp to remain, it’s an excellent source of fiber which also supports detoxification.

Detoxifying isn’t something you do once a year so you can fit into your summer clothes, it’s not a fad diet with unhealthy restrictions both emotionally and physically, it’s a way to nourish the body and spirit. It is more beneficial to use the opportunity of “cleansing” as a starting point to reset your relationship with your habits, your self care practices and with your food choices so you can make healthier sustainable lifestyle changes from that point forward, making it a way of life not just a “fad”.
